The Apple AirPort Extreme 5th Generation is a wireless router designed, manufactured, and sold by Apple from 2011 to 2013 as part of the AirPort Extreme series. The router was introduced on June 21, 2011, and its price started at $179.
The new AirPort Extreme features a Gigabit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T), maximum speed has been increased up to 540 Mbps, compatibility with 802.11a/b/g/n protocols, guest networking, three LAN ports, the possibility to connect up to 50 devices, and Dual-band operation on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously.
The new AirPort Disk feature allows users to plug a USB hard drive into the AirPort Extreme for use as a network-attached storage (NAS) device for Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows clients. Users may also connect a USB hub and printer.
AirPort Extreme was updated with simultaneous dual-band 802.11n capability, remote AirPort Disk accessibility through Back to My Mac, and the ability to broadcast a guest network simultaneously as an existing one. Introduced antenna improvements in this version resulting in wireless performance gains in both speed and range.
This AirPort Extreme has been discontinued on June 10, 2013. Today AirPort Extreme 5th Generation is 12 years old!
